Hello

I’ve been wanting to make an old school blog for a little while now. I’m not really a big social media user. I don’t have any burning convictions that must be shared with the world. However, I do find that putting things in writing in a place that could conceivably be read by someone else helps to crystalise. Putting things in words as a way to develop form for thoughts that are otherwise free-floating. Also a platform to practive communicating some very nuanced things in a place where my poor coworkers and team members don’t have to be the guinea pigs.

What do I write about?

A lot of the things floating around my noggin these days are about how we’re building the organization and product at Samara. We’re about 25 people at time of writing and just starting to leave the “group of friends in a garage” phase of a startup. We’re certainly far from grown up, but relationship between everyone in the company are no longer a given. At the same time, we’re in what is perhaps one of the most defining moments technically for our company: building out the first satellite that will prove our technology. The double crux of rapid team expansion with intense technical challenges is quite a common one, I think.

I usually get the urge to write about the non-technical problems I’m facing. Team dynamics, culture building, product design, project management strategies, organizational scaling, etc. Those tend to be the ones that keep me up at night, and for me there’s therapy in writing things out. I’d love for this to become a record of how I (and maybe Samara) grow overs the years.

And if it ever provides value to anyone else, that’s nice too.
